Evgeni Malkin gave the Sidney Crosby-less Pittsburgh Penguins a full two points in the standings with one powerful shot. Malkin, the NHL points leader, scored on a power play at 1:36 of overtime to give the Penguins a 5-4 victory over Chicago on Friday night in the first game of a five-game trip. Crosby missed his second straight game because of a groin injury.

Osgood makes 30 saves, Wings top Kings (AP)

Chris Osgood’s mini midseason training camp produced results. The struggling goalie made 30 saves in his return to Detroit’s lineup after a four-game break, leading the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night. Osgood has a 3.22 goals-against average, which is 42nd in the NHL, and an .883 save percentage, which is 32nd.

Mathieu Schneider was able to do for Montreal on the final shot of the game what Philadelphia failed to achieve in eight tries. Score on the power play. Schneider scored with a man advantage at 3:21 of overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia on Friday night. “I just tried to hang on and just get a wrister through with a screen,” Schneider said.
